Tailwind Friesians Presents
Tommy Allen

Tommy Allen graduated from Cashmere High School and is a student at Central Washington University. While he is a member of the CWU rodeo team, calf ropes, team ropes, and rides saddle bronc, his talents go beyond the sport. Tommy advertises his training methods as "Communication Based Horsemanship." Not only does Tommy communicate well with the horse but he is also a talented teacher for the client. This is a rare and valuable trait in a horse trainer. His style is his own, but you will recognize shades of Monty Roberts and some Clinton Anderson. He also utilizes certain natural horsemanship techniques, but only to the point of accomplishing a goal and gaining respect. He doesn't get lost in one philosophy, but has a tool box of techniques for the personality of each horse. He utilizes some of the old cowboy techniques, using a lariat in his bending and sacking-out exercises. He even begins some basic roping exercises as one of the sacking out lessons in the saddle. The term "Horse Whisperer" is to cliche for this young talent, who speaks articulately both to horse and rider. Tailwind Friesians trusts Tommy to put a solid start on our Friesian Horses to then take them in any direction. The horses learn respect, softness, whoa, walk, trot, canter, and the beginnings of lateral work. Tommy has expressed interest in learning more about dressage and has a natural connection with the Friesian Horse. From Tommy:
I grew up in Newberg, a suburb of Portland Oregon in a quaint rock house on 10 acres called Casa Roca. My mom sold equestrian real estate and had a big Thoroughbred mare she competed in hunter/jumpers on so I was fortunate to spend some time at wonderful horse facilities around amazing horses. When I was 7 my brother and I received a paint pony (welsh quarter cross) we called Chili Pepper. I learned pretty quickly that Chili's idea of where we should go (and how fast) could be quite different from mine, and thus my passion for communicating with horses got it's start . When I was 12 my family moved to Wenatchee Washington where the majority of my junior high and high school years were spent playing sports, ( focus on baseball pitching/ catching,). Through the hours at the ball park it dawned on me that a catchers throw down was very similar to a tie down ropers delivery, so much to my father's dismay, I walked away from a baseball scholarship for rodeo and never looked back. Currently I compete for Central Washington University in the classic rodeo event of saddle bronc plus team and tie down roping. I spent the Summer of 2005 on a Dude ranch out of Jackson Hole Wyoming where I was required to start a string of dude horses including drafts, perform at a weekly ranch rodeo and teach people ( many who had never been on a horse) to ride. Needless to say I learned a lot about horses and about people. As a team and calf roper I became frustrated by the harsh methods and lack of horsemanship I often observed at ropings and decided that above all I wanted to be an accomplished horseman. I spent 6 months at a large cutting facility starting young horses and was also able to attend the cutting horse finals at Forth Worth watching and actually riding with some top trainers. I also learned invaluable techniques for working with young horses from working cow horse, and reining trainer Kim Witty in Ellensburg. My philosophy on training is simple; irregardless of the breed or discipline I am dedicated to thinking outside the box to find the solution that will bring out the confidence and potential in each horse.
